A record 30 meter (98 foot) diameter steel pipe pile was driven by First Harbor Engineering Company of China and APE near Hainan Island for the new international airport for Sanya, China. The massive pile is 30 meters in diameter, 34 meters long and weighs over 600 metric tons. Used steel sheet piling must be in good condition, and its use must be approved by the Engineer prior to driving. The most common steel sheet piling shapes are the PZC types. For example, for a PZC-27 section, the P stands for “pile” the Z is for the “type or shape”, and 27 represents the unit weight per ft 2 of material.

Specification for Steel Sheet Piles 18 December 2000. The Contractor shall satisfy himself that the sheet piles can be installed adequately to the correct depths through the reported or anticipated soil conditions. The Engineer shall be notified 24 hours before the commencement of driving. Hot-Rolled Sheet Piling, such as, Lightweight, LZ, SZ, and MSZ (Mega-Z). All shapes can be used for combined walls and are available in all grade qualities. Similar to H-Pile, it is an exciting time for Sheet Pile as well. Additional sizes for both Hot-Rolled, PZC Sheet Piling, and Cold-Formed Mega-Z (MSZ) Sheet Piling are being manufactured.
