Rediscovered and popularized by Pablo Casals a century ago, these suites vary greatly in difficulty and style. As a result, developing cellists tend to spend a great deal of time with these suites over the course of their education. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, arranged and edited by Janos Starker for solo cello. It was in New York that Starker made the first of his recordings of the Bach Cello Suites. [citation needed] In 1953, Starker became principal cellist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra when Fritz Reiner became the music director. In 1958, Starker moved to Bloomington, Indiana, where he settled for the rest of his life. Janos Starker was born on July 5, 1924 in Budapest, Hungary. Starker’s first cello teacher was Fritz Teller. After a few months, his parents decided to take him to Teller’s teacher Adolph Schiffer; Schiffer had been David Popper’s student and succeeded him at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music where Starker studied.
