Overboosting turbo problem

Mitsubishi L200 Turbo Overboost – Power Limitation Problem Power restriction under heavy acceleration, mostly in second and occasionally in third gear was the symptom. It was almost as if the turbo had cut, if you released the throttle and reapplied it or in the case of third gear – changed down power would be restored.

I had swapped it out for an aftermarket unit which did not leak and I was overboosting to 21 PSI with an ECU tune set to open the wastegate on base spring pressure alone. Not good. Returning to the leaky OEM BPV allowed boost to be controlled again and brought under 18 PSI. Obviously not ideal, but, it's a wastegate problem. A common complaint and a reason why the original Garrett turbocharger requires replacement is overboosting. The turbo tends to over boost and at times have an erratic boost curve as it spools up. It is not uncommon to see the GT2052v Garrett turbo on the ZD30 Patrol spike in boost pressure to well over 20psi.
